Krymov @SCRUM
Hailed by the Guardian as “among the greatest directors in the world”, Dmitry Krymov now lives in political exile from Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. Facing wide-spread censorship in his home country, Krymov now returns to create new work in the UK for the first time since his rave-reviewed productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Opus 7 wowed audiences at the RSC, Barbican, and Edinburgh International Festival over a decade ago.
During his residency at SCRUM Studios, he is opening his process to emerging directors and actors, offering a unique opportunity to explore Chekhov with the guidance of one of Russia’s leading theatrical visionaries.
About the masterclass
This is a masterclass for advanced-practice creatives, who have three or more professional credits.
The selected participants will be sent four Chekhov scenes in advance and be asked to familiarise themselves with them. The four directors will each be asked to bring a first ‘hunch’ for their scene, and stage it rapidly with the pool of actors in the course of the workshop. Krymov will then respond to the material shown.
If you are not a participant actor/director you can also learn from Krymov’s process as an observer. There are 25 observer tickets which will be released in September.

Why free?
At SCRUM, we strive to address in some way the lack of affordable opportunities for theatre professionals wishing to develop their creative practice. We are immensely grateful to Dmitry Krymov for offering this masterclass to our community of theatremakers for free.
